FIELD RESEARCH

The following were some of the questions I asked people and along with them are the answers, in the form of bar graphs.

Q1. What is your age?

Q2. Do you know how to drive a car?

Q3. When did you learn to drive ?

Ans. Most of them learnt driving between the ages of 18 and 22.
Quite a few of them learnt driving before turning 18.
Some of them have still not learnt how to drive.

Q4. Did you learn to drive under  adult or professional supervision?                                       Or others...

Ans. More than 65 % learnt driving under Professional supervision.
The majority rest learnt under Adult supervision.
And the rest learnt on their own.

Q5. How often do you drive ?
Q6. Do you always wear a seat belt?

Q7. Have you ever been involved in an accident ?

Q8. Who do you think was at fault ?

Q9. Do you keep in mind all the traffic rules?

Q10. Do yo follow the traffic rules ?

I learnt a lot from talking to different people, observing many drivers myself (in real time).
I learnt that many people nowadays are very impatient. They want to get to point B as quickly as they can, doesn't mater how fast they go or how much inconvenience they cause to the others.

Also, rules and regulations have not been implemented as strictly as they should have. Due to this, the people are becoming more and more negligent day by day (chalta hai attitude) and they think that they can get away with everything.

STAKEHOLDER ANALYSIS

A stakeholder is a person with an interest or concern in  an issue, business, project or a system.
Here, I will be analyzing the stakeholders for the traffic system that is used.

PEDESTRIANS AND TRAFFIC

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to transportation, but there’s one that all road users share — everyone is a pedestrian. Unfortunately, pedestrians are one of the few groups of road users to experience an immense increase in fatalities.

While there are solutions to reducing traffic jams due to vehicles, not much of a difference has been made.

This is because pedestrians contribute to traffic as well, knowingly or unknowingly:

  • Not paying attention to the road
  • By logging up the roads in the event of an accident
  • Jaywalking - rushing in to cross the road even when they shouldn't be, walking on the road itself rather than on footpaths or designated areas.

PROBLEM ASSESSMENT MATRIX

This is the step we use to narrow down our problem statement.
This is also known as Risk Matrix.

This table shows the risks and also how high the risks are.

using this step, i have narrowed down the problem and redefined it as followed:

DESK RESEARCH

Key reasons for accidents are:

  1.   Not wearing seat belts or helmets:

  •   Majority of injuries and deaths that occurs in roads accidents can be avoided by use of               seat-belts and helmets.
  •   Unrestrained passengers in rear seats are a threat not only to themselves but to those sitting in   the front seats. In case of a crash, they can be thrown into the back of the front seats or hit         other passengers, causing injury.
  •  Seat-belts are by far the most important protection you can have in a crash.

     2.   Over-Speeding:

  •  Reducing the vehicle’s speed plays a great role in preventing accidents.
  • An adult pedestrian has less than a 20% chance of dying if struck by a car at less than 50 km/h but almost a 60% risk of dying if hit at 80 km/h.

     3. Driving under influence of drugs or alcohol can cause:

  • Poor coordination: trouble doing more than one thing at a time, difficulty steering the car.
  • Longer reaction time: reacting more slowly when something unexpected happens (a car approaching you from the side, people crossing the street).
  • Poor judgment: trouble judging your and other people’s behaviour (including speed, distances, movement) and estimating risks.
  • Reduction in concentration, memory, vision and hearing:
focusing only on the road ahead, losing track of what is taking place in your peripheral vision area, missing out on things you see and hear.
  • False sense of confidence and overestimation of abilities: feeling more confident and taking risks that you would not usually take.

      4. Rash driving:

  • Causes dis-balance among other drivers.
  • Can cause accidents on a large scale (in terms of damage or no. of vehicles involved)

·     5.  Distracted driving:
  •  Any activity that prevents you from giving the road your complete attention while driving is extremely dangerous. Therefore, it is important to avoid distractions when you are behind the wheel. We live in an increasingly busy world and while it is no surprise that drivers attempt to multi-task to save time, these activities can be hazardous.
  • For this reason, laws to ban texting and other cellphone activities while driving have been passed all over the world. However, technology is not the only problem. Eating while driving, having an intense conversation with the passenger or trying to put on makeup while driving, for instance, are also major safety concerns.

      6.  Driving while tired or sleepy:

      7.  Not driving according to weather conditions:

CONDITION OF ROAD TRANSPORT IN INDIA

Road transport in lndia is very popular for various reasons, but the condition of lndian roads is very poor. The rate at which road-accidents and fatality in the country occur is very high. Pressure on roads has been increasing and the number of vehicles as well.

Lack of road-sense has further complicated the matters. Driving licenses are given on illegal gratifications to the authorities and traffic rules and regulations are thrown to the winds. Overloading is one of the major factors of road- accidents and deaths. The condition of the vehicles is hardly found road-worthy.
